  7.     There are quite a few encyclopedias on the market. Most are
  8.     multimedia. All are on CD and require Windows. Microsoft's entry is
  9.     in a class by itself.
  10.  
  11.     Encarta contains articles, animations, sounds, illustrations, graphs
  12.     and photographs as well as an atlas and  a dictionary. I have delved
  13.     so deeply into Encarta, using hyper-link features of one subject
  14.     talking you to another and another, that I discovered more
  15.     information that I bargained for. While other encyclopedias were
  16.     ported over from hard-bound copies (Grolier's, Compton's, etc.),
  17.     Encarta, from the ground up, was designed on a computer to  run on a
  18.     computer.

  20.     Microsoft worked with many experts and specialists to create this
  21.     product. The work shows in the high-quality photographs,
  22.     illustrations, maps and sounds. A category browser lets you quickly
  23.     go to a specific area of interest like: Life Science, Sports, Art,
  24.     Literature, Social Science, Religion and Philosophy, History and
  25.     more. Each is then divided further. For example, History will show
  26.     US History, World History, etc.

  28.     At the end of articles is a Bibliography reference. Clicking on this
  29.     number will bring up the related materials.

  31.     Encarta Features:

  33.     * More than 21,000 articles in 94 categories.

  35.     * More than seven hours of sound (6,500) pieces, including music,
  36.     nature sounds, historical speeches and foreign languages, such as
  37.     the national anthems of more than 170 countries, examples of 46
  38.     languages, from American Navaho to Swahili and literature readings
  39.     by authors such as T.S. Eliot and Alan Ginsberg.

  41.     * Nearly 100 animations on many topics, including everything, from
  42.     the destruction caused by an earthquake to the elegance of the waltz
  43.     to a simple explanation of the quantum theory.

  45.     * More than 800 color maps, including a world atlas and voice
  46.     pronunciations of country names and more.

  48.     * Dictionary comprised of 83,000 words and 40,000 thesaurus entries.

  53.     explain subjects like the Crusades and the American Civil War.

  55.     There is also a TimeLine, which is 20-feet long. It covers from 15
  56.     million B. C. to the present. Click on a date or event and explore
  57.     the subject through hyper-link.

  59.     There is a game called Mind Maze. It is an interactive
  60.     knowledge/adventure game. You progress through the maze, and go to
  61.     another room, by correctly answering questions posed in each room.
  62.     There is animation and sound in most of the areas. It will put your
  63.     knowledge to the test. An excellent learning tool for children, and
  64.     a nice refresher for adults.

  66.     Selecting Gallery from the main menu brings up a list of sights and
  67.     sounds. From here you can choose the slide show. This will go
  68.     through the list, and you will see and hear each subject as it
  69.     appears. When browsing an article that contains more than one
  70.     picture, or charts and tables, as you page down, the appropriate
  71.     item will appear in accordance to the text.

  73.     Information contained is very extensive and skillfully presented. I
  74.     was looking at football. I received a complete explanation of the
  75.     game. I saw the measurements of the field, hand signals the
  76.     referee's use for infractions complete with yardage gained or lost.
  77.     There was also an explanation of different types of formations with
  78.     drawings to show you where the players play, etc. Anyone who does
  79.     not know anything about football, and wants to know, will come away
  80.     with a full understanding of the game. There are many other features
  81.     like this that I have not touched on.

  83.     See photos of all the Presidents; complete list of all the Popes;
  84.     all players inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame; all World Boxing
  85.     Champions and many other subjects. Do you know the complete
  86.     breakdown of leadership in the Executive Brach of US Government? Who
  87.     is under whom? You can view a complete hierarchy chart showing all
  88.     the divisions. Even see Clinton-Gore victory celebration. That is
  89.     how current Encarta is.

  91.     In addition to all the mentioned features, you can use Wizard to aid
  92.     you in finding your material. When you select Wizard you are
  93.     prompted to enter search criteria. You can enter name, place, years
  94.     and so forth. Wizard will quickly search for all matches for all
  95.     criteria.

  97.     I have been pleased with many of the reference works that I have
  98.     either reviewed or used. However, none has enthralled me as much as
  99.     Encarta. While it is nice to have several reference works, if you
  100.     only want to buy one, then Microsoft Encarta is a MUST HAVE!!! You
  101.     will not be disappointed.
